Three Saints on Oxford Street

with 5 comments

A strip of Oxford Street in Darlinghurst – on the way up to Paddington – renamed itself ‘Three Saints’ recently.

It actually happened in the second half of 2008. Businesses on the Oxford Street, South Dowling Street, Victoria Street and Barcom Avenue intersection started talking renaming, set up a website, and started jamming out some names.

  • Fruit Bat Crossing
  • Penguin Square

They settled on Three Saints, due to nearby St Vincents, St Sophia and Sacred Heart.

So they’ve got the branding down.

Top picture is the window of Ariel bookshop – and below, Ariel’s shopping bags.

Is this common, this renaming business?

What’s the 3111

There’s a nordic man peeking out from a corner, just behind Taylor Square, Darlinghurst.

His helmet says ‘3111′ – what’s that about?

Defying the law (again)

These birds flew down Clapton Street Place, Darlinghurst, the wrong way in October.

Now balloons are falling amongst the birds.

Hayden Place guerrilla

Those grandiose guerrilla gardeners are one thing, but I have a lot of love for the other end of the spectrum.

Walking past the newsagent on Victoria Street, I did a double take when I spied this little garden.

It’s not necessarily there for posterity. But it’s beautiful.

More, please.

Hideous shop

with 12 comments

Byron Bay-based micro-bikini company Wicked Weasel opened a flagship shop on Victoria Road, Darlinghurst, last year. They spared no expense fitting the huge place out, but I walk past most days and have never seen anyone go in or out.

I’ve been expecting some kind of culture jamming, considering the rapid response to billboards in the neighbourhood.

Spotted this bit of graffiti at about 7am this morning – so the shop’s either very fast at cleaning away the culture jam, or this is a first.

Bill Henson will be prosecuted

Galleries getting more confident. Latest issue of Art World has an advert for Bill Henson on the back. This edit, spotted in Darlinghurst in November, suggests someone’s not sure.
