Letters on the lane

with 2 comments

Denham Lane, Surry Hills, has been given a typographic makeover.

A long neck of beer is the only human evidence of last night’s creative outpouring, but the text is piled up from the corner of Bloomfield Lane.

Further down Denham Lane, the words taper off until they’re just individual letters flailing about on the tarmac.

It’s not just paint on the lane though. There’s a record, casually placed at the top of this tower of text. And two portraits, hanging side by side, looking down the lane.

There’s no clear signature on this, but ‘SC’ is painted on the curb at the corner of Denham and Bloomfield Lanes, and various sources are pointing to Sarah Cunningham, one half of Swimgreen.

It’s a beautiful refiguring of the lane as gallery space – completely altering the atmosphere. I want to find out more.

UPDATE (2/10/09): I got in touch with Sarah, and asked her about it.

Well, basically I had a bit of a falling out with my lecturers at COFA and decided to create my own ‘end of year exhibition’.

I’m interested in exploring the impact of aesthetics within our environment and within different contexts. It also sort of stemmed from a quote by John Forbes suggesting, “How we see things determines how we act and even who ‘we’ are.”

I just wanted to put beautiful fine art prints in the streets to propagate or sell nothing more than the beautiful within Sydney for any audience.

People get to walk down the words of William Blake to view two portraits I’ve taken.

It has been made in response to numerous factors but specifically for this laneway’s usual inhabitants and the community that surrounds it.

The prints were torn down overnight, but Sarah plans to stick them up over the weekend, “HIGHER.” Keep your eyes peeled for more.
